Looks like I made a bit of an error and ordered a 77 air filter screen instead of a 76.

If you look at the photo it has two circular outlets whereas I think mine is supposed to be one long oval outlet (I.e. to suit the same shape on the black plastic box connecting the air filter housing and the carbs) - excuse my terminology.

My question is will this still work or do I perhaps need to modify the filter screen to make it one large outlet...

I had an air leak on the carb boot. Sorry I didnít reapond sooner. Havenít been on here in a while.

mine has a long spring between clevis of clutch arm to shoulder of the clutch cable holder.

You are missing that spring

make sure the pressure plate is fully seated.  I had this issue the other day and noticed I didn't align the pressure plate correctly.

Ok  thanks again for your help. I have bought that original filter off eBay so am going to keep everything stock and get the bike up and running with the BS38s.

Yep. CV carbs like to be fed intake air by a plenum and smooth pipe to the bellmouth.  Pods like these filter the air but introduce turbulence at the intake that confuses the vacuum signal at the vent in the top of the bellmouth  that causes the slide to raise and lower. So, a lot of times you end up with unsteady slide movement that feels like hesitation and surging. If you must run pods you'll be happier if you convert to round slide carbs without butterfies.
