The 78 has round exhaust ports. You have several options. Use stock round headpipes and put slip on mufflers of your choice. Google the crap out of the internet for 78 pipes ( Jardine, Hooker,Dicks Cycle West/Racer1, Predator,Winnings, etc.) Build your own from scratch if you have the skills.  Or if you find a nice early model oval pipe 2 into 1 you can gently massage the thinwall  header pipes back into round. I did exactly that with my first header. And these guys might still have this pipe lying around?http://www.loudfastugly.com/exhausts

Looks like I should be on the hunt for some bs34 II carbs and boot. Mine only came with one boot and no carbs :/

On a side note, the boot has a port on it with a rubber tube, is that supposed to connect to the other boot or what is that for?

The BS38 Mikuni carbs and parts for them are far more common then the earlier Keihins found on the 73 through 75 model 500s. They are found on all of the XS650 models up to 1979. The Keihins used a different airbox plenum and carb mounting joints too. The XS500E used the later BS34 II carbs that are also very common but again use a different airbox and carb joints to fit them.

Hi,

Has anyone used the older carbs on the newer model? Did you have to go up jets? Or is it even possible or worth just buying the newer carbs?

This is for a 1976 XS500C (1J3)
I recently had my seat rebuilt (new foam, new vinyl).  During the process, a couple of the aluminum pins which hold the seat trim broke.  Since the seat is an assembly, there is no part number for these pins, and I was unable to find anything similar with which to replace them.
My solution was to use two #10 SAE Stainless Flat Washers (Home Depot # 800 331 by Everbilt), a #6-32 x 3/4" Flat Head Phillips Machine Screw, and a #6-32 Nut.  The screws and nuts came in a combo pack (Home Depot # 460 428 by Everbilt).
Place one washer on the screw, slide into the trim channel, poke the screw through the vinyl/frame/vinyl, secure with the second washer and nut.  A dab of Loctite might also be beneficial.
I hope this helps others with the same problem.

I broke down today and although I have power to the lights etc, the engine died and the starter will not respond to the starter switch, any ideas wher I should start looking?

Help would really be appreciated
