Introductions / Returning XS500B Rider
« Last post by Wilfreado on December 15, 2017, 05:08:42 PM »
Hello everybody. Thanks for letting me in.
My first 4 Stroke was a '75 XS500B in 1977 at the tender age of 18!
I'm picking up the same model bike next week for a massive nostalgia trip.
Looking forwards to your company during this adventure. I'll post some pics up when it arrives. 😊

1. Cable is fine, smooth with no damage.
2. I will adjust the cable again as described and report back
3. First loosen locknut, then turn screw to obtain freeplay. (1/16-1/8th in) <-- At hand
loosen lock nut and rotate screw until it lightly seats against clutch rod, then back screw out 1/4 turn and lock down nut.

I will make a video of me doing this and upload so I can have my technique adjusted if I am doing it wrong

I am still here!  But very much busy with other projects and life in general.

But you are correct, we did get to a point where the only regular contributors to the forum were myself, Guy, Dean and a few others- it was a conscious decision to step back a little and let others help each other out.

A lot of the issues raised have been covered and the Search function will usually turn up a host of answers on most problems.  ALL of the often lamented problems with these bikes we solved a few years ago- camchain, camchain links, oil filters, timing......

If anybody is really stuck I will still try and help- camchain links and oil filters still getting sent to all corners of this planet on a weekly basis!  :)

The video is helpful; at least now I have an idea of where to begin.  It's not clear yet what the problem is, but let's start with the basics.

Have you inspected the clutch cable itself to make sure that it is not bound up or damaged?   If not, detach both ends of the inner (braided steel) cable and slide the inner cable back and forth in the (outer) cable housing.   Feel for any drag as you move the inner cable back and forth.  If the inner cable does not move back and forth easily, check for damage (such as a pinched/kinked outer cable, or a frayed inner cable).

If your cable is good, it's time to move on to the next step: adjust the clutch and cable according to the procedure outlined in the service manual.   As you know, there are two places to adjust the clutch and cable: one is on the handlebar lever, and one is on the left side of the motor.    I suspect you may have adjusted the one on the left side of the motor incorrectly.

So, here is the next step: copy and post the paragraph from the factory service manual which describes how that clutch adjustment on the left side of the motor should be done.

I think crouchy used to be a lot more active but has since stopped posting it seems and he is the main source of knowledge on these bikes :(

Hi Guy,

I finally got my kickstarter installed so it will turn over my engine. Before when I was trying to install it would not turn over the engine, the clutch basket would spin but the pistons/timing/etc would not be moving. (if this makes sense, if not I will break out the manual and use all the correct terms).

However that problem has been solved as I loosened the clutch adjustment screw at the engine and installed the kickstarter and now when I kick the whole engine spins. If you could look at the video I put up and help me with that as I can not get this clutch to have any cable tension no matter how tight or loose i might the engine clutch adjustment screw.

(on a side note it seems as though I can not shift or something is going on because my back wheel is able to freely spin all the time)

hi all,

i am trying to install the kickstart. I have the cover off now and put the kickstart in and it spins the clutch but not the timing rod? Any suggestions or tips?

Any progress? I'm very confused over your problem and I assume that most of the others are too. Are you using the Yamaha Service manual? If you are please use the part names that appear there. Photos would also help but a careful explanation will usually do.

Guy
