New tires
« on: September 24, 2015, 01:28:46 AM »
I need new tires for my 1978 xs500.

I've seen Avon AM26 Roadriders being recommended here.

Are these for use with tubes?  Currently I have tubes.  Can some one tell me what size / brand / model tubes to use for front and back.

Also, can someone who has these tires tell me the correct size for the front and the back.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

You can use tubes in them with no problem. I run them tubeless in my XS500C with no issues but the 500 cast wheels were not machined with the bead retention ridge profile that helps keep the tire on the rim in the event of a rapid blowout or gradual pressure loss. You don't want to go oversize on the narrow 500 rims so stay with a 3.25-19 front and 110/90-18 rear. I think I got mine from Bike Bandit or Revzilla but there are several outlets that carry them so Google is your friend.

So I bought the Avon Roadrider 4.00-18 tire for the rear and replaced the tube, 400/450 18 inner tube, and dyna beads to balance.

It's a nice looking tire. Seems to ride ok too.
