Buying XS500- advice needed
« on: October 28, 2012, 08:56:36 PM »
Hi all,

I'm looking for '76-78 XS500 buying advice. I would like to restore one to a very nice original "daily rider" condition,  but not necessarily showroom condition. My plan is to buy a runner, and perhaps a parts bike, and do this over the winter. Of course my plans are subject to change, depending on whats available out there, and more importantly, the feedback I receive from you.

Any common XS500  problems that I should look for?
(For example, on the '70s  Honda CB400F, the cam chain tensioner bolt was located on the lower front of the engine, and many of these would seize from all the street muck.)

NOS or replica exhaust systems seem to be hard (impossible?) to find.  Any other parts that are not available?

I understand that the original oil filters are rare as hens teeth and that an adaptor exists to allow using another filter? Where can I get the adaptor, and which filter will fit ?

Original air filters still available?

If you were going to buy a '76-'78 XS500 now, what would you look for?

I've bought many used bikes, and rebuilt several engines, so I'm good on the general stuff.

Good riding,

Bernie

The starter chain drive is pretty week. They grind, they rattle, the starter slips. Thats why they still had a kick start.

Thats all that I can think of. I got a '75 that is 80% original and all I had to do was plug 2 holes under the carb manifold and the bike runs. It start on first try every time. runs good but needs new clutch plates. Not bad for almost 37 years old.

Thanks for the reply! I will listen for unusual noises when testing the starter motor.

I've seen two XS500s so far, and their condition has been a reminder that these bikes are 30+ years old. A third one coming up.  It's in pretty good shape, and I would  be buying it from the second owner, who has owned it for 25 years.

OK-I bought one! It has a fairly quiet sounding top end, no chain rattling or valve ticking.  It appears that the  "mature" owner maintained it really well.
