I don't know which  year.  I can tell you that the XS500 engine serial number and frame serial number are usually identical or very close together. (Within 3 numbers.)

Can you post pics of the carburetors? (Pic of both sides and top.)  That might help narrow it down.

I have two '76 XS500 engines , both serial numbers are  1J3-00xxxx.

We're starting a registry of XS500 and TX500 Yamahas.
Hopefully we can bracket your serial number...

The registry idea is excellent- Yamaha were firing these bikes off all around the world and it would be interesting to see which market got what- and also an idea of how many were sold!

berniebee is right- if the engine is still in the frame and the engine and frame numbers match, then it's easier to date the frame.  I used to think the matching numbers were a masterpiece of Japanese production line efficiency and accuracy- but probably more likely the guy on the end of the line just stamped the frame number onto the engine casing...

I have some Yamaha documents that show 1978 XS500E supplied into US market with frame and engine numbers starting 1J3-200101, bike colour "SAB" which I think is Yamaha code for Star Black.  This covers the original question.  but the same year model and colour sent to Canada, "Oceania" and "Other" markets they used the range starting 1J3-300101.  Same year Europe used 1H2-200101 onwards.

The survey will be interesting.....
1975 Honda CB200T (2) - 1975 Yamaha XS500B (2) - 1976 Yamaha XS500C
1977 Yamaha RD400D - 1977 Yamaha XS500D - 1978 Honda CB550K - 1980 Honda CB400N
1980 Honda CB900FA - 2000 Kawasaki ZX6-RG2 - 2002 Suzuki GSX-R1000K2
