There is a Facebook group, but the quality of some of the advice on there makes me cringe sometimes?

This forum gets plenty of traffic and 2-3 new members a day.  But most just find the information and help they need and drift off again without contributing.  We have tackled just about all of the problems a new owner faces and solved them.

As always a forum is what the members make of it!

This forum has a wealth of knowledge .
Although I have brought problems needing resolution , I have been distracted reading many of the posts , learning new things about this bike despite it's years.
I am the first owner on the log book of my '79 XS500 , and having had other bikes and worked on friends bikes in the past , found several elements in this engine that in the 80's seemed to be the answer of our problems experienced on other bikes .
(Although I wish the camchain didnt need to be split to get the head off - memories of changing a 400/4 head gasket one night in the dark , and appreciating how easy it came apart)
Interesting to note that this site has members from many countries , and presumably different views on how this bike should look - custom , standard , concourse , etc
Hopefully my rather extended rebuild of my bike will be completed one day , but in the mean time this site provides reassurance of like minded people enjoying this bike.

I think crouchy used to be a lot more active but has since stopped posting it seems and he is the main source of knowledge on these bikes :(

I am still here!  But very much busy with other projects and life in general.

But you are correct, we did get to a point where the only regular contributors to the forum were myself, Guy, Dean and a few others- it was a conscious decision to step back a little and let others help each other out.

A lot of the issues raised have been covered and the Search function will usually turn up a host of answers on most problems.  ALL of the often lamented problems with these bikes we solved a few years ago- camchain, camchain links, oil filters, timing......

If anybody is really stuck I will still try and help- camchain links and oil filters still getting sent to all corners of this planet on a weekly basis!  :)
