To confirm, these are Keihins.
No diaphragm on these carbs, yes the vacuum piston (sliding unit) kind of acts like a diaphragm.
1972- '74 models were TX500(A)
1975 onwards were XS500

Splendid. One less thing to worry about!  Thanks for the info. Its humbling knowing absolutely nothing about all this, bit I've always wanted to be at least semi competent to keep a bike on the road !
