I blew my main fuse on my 76 XS500C and as it turns out, the regulator/rectifier is the culprit. The rectifier I took out is the stock Stanley DE 3804 and the back side has scorching on it... So: what are you all doing for rectifiers? I can get a used on on Ebay for not much money ~$20 or so, or I can get the new one from Electrosport -

Ive read some not great things about these units on the this forum - http://www.xs500forum.com/index.php?topic=517.0

or http://www.xs500forum.com/index.php?topic=588.msg2933#msg2933

These threads are pretty old now though.  What are you using? Thoughts on replacement?

The rectifier on the 500 is a separate unit from the regulator and is the same one used on many other Yamahas of that era including the RD400 and XS360/400. So I'd look for a cheap eBay used one of those first. You can also go for a combined regulator/rectifier unit as used on the XS750/850 triples and XS1100 if there is enough room to mount it in the same spot. The plugs should be the same just remove the separate regulator.
