Where's the starter jet ?
« on: September 01, 2018, 02:29:45 PM »
It seems my xs is a bitsa. B engine with mikuni carbs so it's really testing me to find part numbers.

It's not running right so I've stripped the carbs and ordered new pilot and main jets (not sure they'll fit but will soon find out). The running issue is start up and idle. It won't start with choke on and during warm up will cut out if the choke is engaged. I've adjusted air/fuel screw and am thinking that the starter jet is either wrong size etc.

The carbs are apart, needles, pilots and main jets are out but I can't find starter jet. My clymer manual doesn't mention it and Babbitts / parts finder doesn't have it on their drawing.

Can anyone tell me where it is please?

If your carbs are BS38s as on the 76 and 77 model XS500 then the starter jet is not replaceable but is the orifice in the brass tube the hangs down into the float bowl. Just clean it and make sure the well that the tube sits in is clear so that fuel can flow into it and you'll be good.

Great, that makes perfect sense. Thanks.
