Did Yamaha TX500 ever come out with alloy rims?
Mine is a USA model and definitely has chrome steel rims!

Also, what is the availability of alloy rims, don't mind if they are the mud catcher type!

Another query... Where do I get a new set of megaphone type muffler (pipes)? (TX500A 1973)

The Japanese domestic models came with shouldered alloys just like those on the XS650 we got here.
To my knowledge nobody is reproducing the original style mufflers.

The XS650 rims and wheel assemblies come up often on eBay and Mike's XS has inexpensive Chinese rims in the same and wider sizes.

I always wondered why they do that kind of stuff for different markets. What's the logic behind that?

Production cost and profit margins. Every Yen you can take out of cost is one that may be added to profit and the Japanese are very careful with that to this day. The 500 was actually more expensive to build than the XS650. Both were premium large displacement motorcycles in the Japanese home market at the time when any bike over 400cc was rare and required a higher level license to operate. So buyers there expected the lighter rims. For our market the 500 was a mid sized bike and had to be sold for less than the 650 hence the cost saving on the alloys.

I've seen a JDM version at the Barber Vintage Festval and it looks really premium with the shouldered alloy rims.

There was actually a prototype 350cc version of the 500 that was SOHC but did not make it to production because of cost of the balancer system. Instead Yamaha came out with the XS360 in its place which was a much cheaper bike to make.

Regarding your question concerning the mufflers (silencers) for your TX500A, I don't know if it is the way you want to go, but there is a company named 'Overlander Motorcycle Equipment' in Bushfield, Victoria that makes replica exhaust systems for British, Japanese, American etc motorcycles out of stainless steel, along with a number of other parts. Although he doesn't list the TX500 - XS500  on his pages, he did make a set of stainless steel silencers, including the large nuts connecting the silencers to the pipes for me. I sent him my rusted out items as a pattern. I'd be surprised if he didn't maintain the ones I sent him for any potential future orders. Or even if you sent him yours, it is just south of the border for you.

I had to make some very minor adjusting bends to the balance pipes to line them up, but other than that, I was very happy with them.
