hello all. im working on my 78 xs and its been 2 years in the making. im at a point now where im in the reassemble process. when I purchased the bike I rode it home from the sale. I then rode it to a shop where they were suppose to be performing some electrical work for me. long story short after a year and a half and no results from the shop I took the bike back and have been addressing all the issues myself. I was not familiar, by any means, with the ignition system on the bike and was doing some work on the harness to install new turn signals and repair some other non working items. I had the key in the on position and did not know that the points would charge the ignition coils and the coils got very hot and the points got burnt. I did as much research as I could find and read that I could just possibly sand/file the points to try to correct that particular issue. after sanding them and checking for spark I found that at spark plugs the spark was very weak and when trying to start the bike it would crank a few times and back fire, thus leading me to believe that I had either faulty points and/or ignition coils. I have a new set of points and a set of used ignition coils that seem to be in working order. I tried to put just the coils on and check spark again and it seems that there was almost no spark at all. im in the process of changing the points and will check again after. the issue im currently having is trouble finding any detailed how to's on replacing the points and setting the timing statically. ive been through many topics on this forum and have found some detail on what to do but nothing that helps me understand thoroughly I guess. my question is, can any one possible describe in detail how to do the static timing and set the points there after. I under stand that there are the plates and that screws have to be loosened and then turning the engine clockwise to find the f1 and f2 marks and checking with a dwell meter or timing light before snugging the screws back down. however I am not sure which screws to loosen for which side. once that is set then points are to be set? what is the gapping suppose to be on the points? any and all help is highly appreciated. if pictures could even be provided so I know what to look for that would be awesome as well. thanks for reading this long ass post and I apologize if my terminology and understanding of this is sub par. im still a newb with this bike
