Og Orion timing mark F or T ?
« on: March 27, 2020, 07:23:03 AM »
I am a little confused. In Haynes manual the timing mark should be set at the F mark, but in Yamaha service manual, it says T mark.

Esther annoying . I just need to be certain.

Hi there the F mark is for fire to say when each cylinder sparks , the T is for top dead centre . So the F left and right (or 1 and 2 depending which model you have) are for ignition timing . The T marks (L and R or 1 and 2) let you know that those cylinders are in the correct place to check the valve clearance on that side.

Hi again I have just had a look at a factory manual I have for the Xs500b the procedure they use is saying to align with the T then adjust to the F mark from there .

I don't know where the “ oh Orion “ comes from. Now I'm confused again. Must be a typo  :o

Have a nice weekend. The sun is shining in Denmark :)

Also before somebody picks me up on this the T mark for top dead centre is used to align the pistons position is at the top of its stroke so that this position is reached when the pointer meets with the T mark on the governor . This must all be correct as a wrongly positioned pointer will give a false reading for the ignition timing.
Stay safe and well everyone  :)
