I believe xs650 front end is a straight swap, not much of an upgrade there- they're equivalent, (though not identical internals) I am running a set with the cartridge emulator kit and love it. More importantly to the question at hand, that also means anything that will swap into a 650 will swap into a 500, and there's probably more info available on that. I'm using an '87 FZR1000 genesis front end on my 650 build, which has never run yet so can't comment on handling, but it should be a significant upgrade in handling not to mention braking. Goldvalve cartridge emulator kit is also available for the FZR forks and is going into mine before they go back together.
