Carb Rebuild Kit - Compatibilty with other models
« on: May 01, 2013, 10:27:36 PM »
I have a '78 XS500E that runs awesome - only 5800 original miles.  I want to rebuild the carburetors but I'm having a heck of a time finding a kit specified for the XS500.  Lots of XS400 and XS650's.  What models, if any, have kits that are compatible with the stock Mikuni carbs?  I've checked countless sites and I'm not finding anything.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Curt, your carbs are basically the same as the BS34 MkII carbs used on later bikes like the XS1100 and XS650 and many more after 1979. So, the kits for those bikes will likely have what you need except the jet sizes may be different. If your old jets will clean up then you'll be set with one of those kits. A good indicator of compatibility is the bowl gasket part number. If you see a later bike with similar carbs as yours compare the bowl gaskets and jet part numbers as found on the Yamaha US website parts lookup. Order a kit for one of those. Good luck and let us know if you come across a good match.

Those will work on the '73-'75 bikes that had the Keihin carburetors but not on the '76 and later with Mikunis.

Also you can check Mike XS  http://www.mikesxs.net/

Though they are mainly an XS650 specialist, many carb parts are common to the 500. I bought everything I needed to rebuild my '76 XS500C carbs at Mikes XS. (The carbs are different from the '78. )  I just compared the pictures and part numbers with mine.

Thanks everyone for your expertise and knowledge!

I looked on partzilla.com and looked for float bowl gaskets and jets.  Looked for bikes with part numbers that matched my '78 xs500E.  Found that most parts were the same as an '80 xs650SG.  Ordered a carb rebuild kit and a bunch of miscellaneous parts from MikesXS yesterday.  I didn't order any jets yet.  I am thinking about installing pods and different exhaust in the future and figured I mess with that setup later.  I will let you know how it goes when the parts get here next week.

I appreciate all the advice!  This is a great site!

Lesson learned!  Be very careful when ordering carb parts based on model and year of "compatable" bikes!  The '80 xs650sg carb parts are not compatable with the '78 xs500e!  And once you order carb parts from MikesXS, you are stuck with them.  They do not take returns on carb parts.  The only part that was compatable was the float bowl gasket.  Ended up being a pretty expensive gasket!  Make sure that you check every OEM part number and order that way instead.

You won't ever find a complete kit so yes, it's a lot of detective work for each and every part.

The gasket comparison could have pointed you elsewhere.  Same gasket and float bowl on the XS400, XS750 and XS1100.  For the XS500E carbs I would actually say that they are closer to the 1977/78 XS400D/E range.  Quite a few XS500E carb parts have 2A2 part identifiers.  But then my parts lists are for Euro models which are different again.

You can also use the Keyster kits with their slapdash jet sizing to your advantage.  For instance Keyster KY-0508N Here has US XS500E MJ #132.5 and PJ #42.5 and the common gasket, needle valve and seat.

But you are still better off than the Keihin guys- now those are rare parts!

Good info Crouchy.  This being my first XS500 I am learning that I need to be very careful when ordering parts.  This will give me another starting point for more carb parts.

I hope I don't have the same problem with the contact points and condenser kit that I ordered from Dennis Kirk.  Their site claimed they would fit my bike.  I'll know in a couple days when those arrive......

Thanks for your help!
